The best new garden statue from 1999 is a sitting gargoyle made by Syd Breeze, a sculptor in Auckland, New Zealand. The gremlin painted in bronze or rust, wears a wry smile . Glossy black eyes give it an amusin, sympathetic air, according to the judges....................
Breeze is a self-taught scuptor who has been making ornamental concrete since 1996. His Stone Talk Sculptures sold about 150 of the gargoyles last year, at around NZ$170. 'Grunta' sits 35cm high and comes with an attitude description of likes and dislikes. He likes "eating gnomes at Christmas time, tripping people up and scaring the neighbour's cat. Grunta dislikes cars running over his toes and dogs peeing on him!"
Grunta has been a popular addition to Stone talk Sculptures, which currently ahs 52 pieces in its range, including Meerkats, Mr Teddy, Tuatars, Egyption Dogman, the New Zealand Takahe and limited editions.
Syd Breeze is expanding his talent into the water feature market to satisfy existing markets.
