Solid Citizen - Jan 2000
It's a Winner - The gargoyle at left, entitled "Grunta", is an original design by scuptor Syd Breeze, a native of Auckland, New Zealand. The sculpture took home first place honors in the inaugural "Solid Award for Statuary" competition as best new garden statue for the year 1999. The $500 prize, which is sponsored annually by Solid Citizen was announced at the industry's annual convention held Jan. 10-12 2000. The gremlin painted in bronze or rust, wears a wry smile. Glossy black eyes give it an amusing, sympathetic air according to the judges.
Four art students in Paris, serving as judges, unaminously chose Breeze's gremlin from the many entries. According to Jean-Baptiste Lestringant, Breeze's gargoyle "will settle very well in a garden surrounded by plants and their root systems. The evident veins on his arms give the impression of being his own roots," noted Lestringant, a judge for the inaugural competition.
